How to use the lumpsum calculator
Enter the amount you are investing once, the yearly return you expect and the number of years. You will see the final value, the growth and how many times your money multiplies.
For example, ₹1 lakh invested for 10 years at 12% a year grows to about ₹3.11 lakh: your money multiplies a little over three times.
The formula
FV = P × (1 + r)t
P is the amount invested, r is the yearly return as a decimal (12% = 0.12) and t is the number of years. The calculator compounds once a year, which is how mutual fund returns (CAGR) are usually quoted.
Lumpsum or SIP?
A lumpsum puts all your money to work at once, so it earns more if markets rise steadily. A SIP spreads your purchase over months, which protects you from investing everything just before a fall. If you have a large amount to invest in equity, a middle path is a systematic transfer plan (STP): park the money in a liquid fund and move a fixed amount into equity every month.
The rule of 72
To estimate how long it takes to double your money, divide 72 by the yearly return. At 8% it takes about 9 years; at 12%, about 6 years; at 15%, under 5 years.
Frequently asked questions
What formula does the lumpsum calculator use?
Future value = P × (1 + r)^t, where P is the amount invested, r is the yearly return as a decimal and t is the number of years.
How long does it take to double my money?
A quick estimate is the rule of 72: divide 72 by the yearly return. At 12% money doubles in about 6 years; at 8% it takes about 9 years.
Is lumpsum better than SIP?
If markets rise steadily, a lumpsum invested early earns more because all the money is invested for longer. A SIP spreads your entry over time, which lowers the risk of investing everything just before a fall.
Does the result include tax?
No. The value shown is before tax. Gains on equity funds held over a year are taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh; debt fund gains are taxed at your slab rate.
