How to use the retirement calculator

Enter your age, when you want to retire, the age you want to plan until and your monthly household expenses today. Then set the inflation rate and the returns you expect before and after retirement, and any savings you already have for retirement.

For example, a 30-year-old who spends ₹40,000 a month today will spend about ₹2.3 lakh a month at 60 if prices rise 6% a year. To pay that until 85, with the money earning 7% after retirement, they need about ₹6.2 crore at 60. Starting from zero, that takes a SIP of about ₹21,800 a month at 11%.

How the corpus is worked out

  1. Expenses at retirement: today's expenses × (1 + inflation)years to retirement.
  2. Corpus needed: the amount that can pay each year's expenses, rising with inflation, from retirement until the age you plan for, while the rest earns the post-retirement return.
  3. Your savings: what you have already saved grows at the pre-retirement return.
  4. Monthly SIP: the SIP that fills the gap between the corpus and your savings by the time you retire.

Make your plan stronger

  • Start early: in the example above, starting at 25 instead of 35 cuts the monthly SIP you need from about ₹29,000 to about ₹16,600, roughly 40% less.
  • Step up your SIP by 10% a year as your salary grows.
  • Keep health insurance after retirement so medical bills don't eat into the corpus.
  • Count PF, PPF and NPS as part of your retirement savings.
  • Plan for longer: plan until 85–90; running out of money late in life is the bigger risk.

Frequently asked questions

How does the retirement calculator work?

It grows today's monthly expenses by inflation until you retire, then works out the corpus that can pay those expenses (still rising with inflation) every year until the age you plan for, while the remaining money earns the post-retirement return.

How much do I need to retire in India?

It depends on your expenses. For example, a 30-year-old spending ₹40,000 a month today needs about ₹6.2 crore at 60 to cover expenses until 85, assuming 6% inflation and 7% returns after retirement.

What return should I assume?

Before retirement, a mix of equity and debt funds has historically returned 10–12% a year over long periods. After retirement, plan with 6–8% from safer investments such as debt funds, FDs and the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme.

What inflation rate should I use?

Retail inflation in India has averaged around 5–6% over the long run. Use 6% or a little more, because health costs usually rise faster than other prices.

Does the plan include PF and NPS?

Enter what you have already saved for retirement, including PF, PPF, NPS and mutual funds. Future contributions to PF and NPS reduce the monthly SIP you need on top.
